iPhone in India

iPhone finally reached India on 22nd Aug, not really finally got launched officially. Many many unlocked iPhones are already present in India, which people brought from other countries and got it unlocked here. iPhone 3G was launched by Apple at an half price of its predessesor just about 1.5 months earlier at $199 (Rs. 8500 approx) . Cheap phone one would suspect and many thought it would be launched at prices similar to that in US. On contrary, Airtel and Vodaphone declared much higher price Rs 31100 ($ 723) for 8GB model and Rs 36000 ($ 837) for 16 GB model.

Is iPhone worth enough to buy at such a high price ? iPhone as a iPod is definately unmatchable. But considering 3G networks are yet to be launched in India. And several features present in cheapest of mobile phones such as cut, copy, paste, call forwarding etc are not present. Per Apple most of these can be tackled as a software update. However if you look at iPhone as whole which was introduced by Steve Jobs as combination of three devices ( iPod, phone and break through internet device). For India this definition needs to change (iPod, phone and very slow internet device) . At such a high price it is certainly favorite for people who have been crazy enough to own it at any cost, show off, whether it is of good enough to use daily or all features are unusable in India come second or not at all in their mind.
